A simple solution to wasting less through the sharing of good quality food.

A community fridge is a space that brings people together to share food, meet up, learn new skills and prevent fresh food from going to waste. They’re open to all and anyone can share or take food, including surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens.

Why do we have a Community Fridge at TMV?

Community fridges are a tried and tested way of reducing the environmental impact of food waste and surprisingly, the only one in Derby is here at TMV!

Every year, the UK bins a shocking 6.4 million tonnes of edible food—worth a staggering £21 billion (WRAP, 2023). And if food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases globally. Across the growing network, each fridge redistributes between one and four tonnes of surplus food per month, making the collective impact of the network huge, and we're proud to be part of it!
At TMV, we want to contribute to:
  • Reduced food waste
  • Increased food access
  • Stronger community bonds
  • Environmental sustainability

So, how does it work?

You simply bring your food, and we help with the rest:
Spot something in the fridge that you would like?

It's quick and easy (faster than waiting in line at a busy supermarket!)
Whether you're after a quick healthy snack, or something to make into a lovely meal, all you need to do is fill a bag or two with whatever you want and we'll weigh and log it out! Then it goes home with you to your kitchen!

What do we accept in our fridge?

At TMV we want to support our community to live healthy, just and regenerative lives! Our fridge will mostly be stocked with loose fruit and veggies, but here is some guidance:
